One might think that after spending so much time in my Narre Warren portrait studio, the last thing I’d want to do is pick up a camera and make more photographs. But let me tell you, this couldn’t be further from the truth. We have a German Shepherd named Puddles and our daily walks are cherished as much by me as they are by her. I see them as the perfect opportunity to wander the streets of Narre Warren and as far out as Berwick just to make some photographs.
On Tuesdays, I head to my gym for a couple of hours of obstacle training. The drive home takes me over Mt Dandenong which I see as the perfect opportunity to get myself lost in the wilderness. This month I stumbled upon a gold mine of information via a chance encounter with Keith and Yvonne. I’m looking forward to heading up here more in hopes of diving further into the stories we shared and bringing some of them to life.
While I didn’t make a portrait of the couple, they let me in on a bunch of the local history. From there I wandered into the dense wilderness and shot an entire roll of Kodak Ektar. There’s a full post here in my blog but I certainly hope this is only the beginning of the adventure.
On the first Sunday of every month in 2023, a group of photographers head out to the streets on a casual photo walk. May was no different and with Peter in charge, we headed over to Yarraville and surrounds. That’s where I made the image of Darcy shooting a BMW. If you’re interested, fill out my form and join us on the next Melbourne photo walk.
Turns out, I do a lot of walking and I’m far from upset about it. The Leica store at Chadstone hosted their own photo walk in May and I had the time to join in. With my Leica Q2 Monochrom in hand, we wandered the Chadstone shopping centre as the rain threatened from outside. Despite being restricted to such a small, seemingly boring location, it’s always a fun challenge to make images in places like this. The Leica walk will no doubt become a regular addition to my month.
May was a good month for walking with cameras. I mean, it’s always a good day to walk with cameras, but this month was great. If we weren’t wandering the streets of Melbourne, my family would go to shopping strips, or the malls or anywhere for the adventure. At one delightful point, we even ended up in the Palais Theatre watching some contemporary ballet.
This month was great and I made a bucket load of images. Hopefully the I did well with the tough task of reducing them to only one per day in the month. So do tell me what you think of this month’s selection.
Thank you for reading.
